Three friends agreed to reminisce about an outing to the Sussex seaside in their youth. I printed the resulting texts and they were put into a show organised by a group of artists led by Jordan Baseman, head of sculpture at the RCA. The print became life size and I drove it to Germany for a show in Mannheim in November 2016. It was joined by paintings and a set of work-in-progress photo-etchings - I really wasn't sure what direction to take them yet (but they became the seed for my MA degree show). When I returned I wanted to develop the title into a series of flags of utterings my mother has made. Things like 'You'll Never Make It' and 'I Could Have Been a Brain Surgeon'. I've only made two so far, 'It Doesn't Matter' and one for the 'A Girl Like You' project. I came there after living several years in a German forest, and the writing was a product of that experience, which included being a bear for a day. I explored the Wildermann - or Wild Man - phenomenon, which is found in many highland regions of Europe and elsewhere, as well as Anglo-German relations, conflict, decapitation, unexpected death, dogs, fate, firefighting, steel helmets, masculinity, masks, migration, mythmaking, the manufacture of paper and sausages. Fertile matters in this time of exiteering and post Cold-War trouble.
